Dune

I tried to upload a test to vimeo, but it doesn't appear. Probably the wrong codec. Animating worked fine, by the way.

TheBadger

Hope to see it soon!

I hope it'll work this time. In 30 minutes time it should be ready..... https://vimeo.com/42483010

It certainly looks interesting Ulco  :)
Maybe 2-3 times the speed would look better. But i liked the kind of flow.
The sound of the video is problematic Ulco but doesn't matter for me.

Dune

It is hardly interesting to animate lava flow, as it goes very slow in reality, and will use up a lot of frames. Speeding it up will make it crazy. Yeah, the sound is horrible after they rewrote the avi.

This is the kind you say probably Ulco:

But...

Here says it can be as fast as 40 miles per hour:

It depends on which kind of lava you want to animate of course .
It is interesting for me but if you don't find it interesting don't do it Ulco  ;)

Dune

Thanks, Kadri. Very enlightening. So I can make a believable eruption/flow after all with my spare means.... that is; not too long but moving at the same time.

TheBadger

I think its ok for a close up, but very good for a far shot. I hope you will keep working on this when you have time. It looks like the method you are figuring out could apply to other things as well, mud slides, for example.

Dune

I've set up a new animation of 500 frames, so I hope I'll get it done some day. Cam moving down towards the crater, while the lava is streaming down. Last bit is close up. I am now trying to get hot lava spewing from the crater, instead of the fat clouds (which I can't animate to boil up believably). Possibly by means of an red/orange chunky cloud, which should move up and down irregularly  ???

#39
I want to exchange the simple hand drawn lava flow map by a more decent one, so I have made a crater in WorldMachine, with some nice eroded gullies. But can anyone tell me how I can get the lowest areas of these gullies to act as a flow map, in other words what should I do in WorldMachine to get that flow map? I have now saved both flow and deposition maps, but although they do give some nice lines streaming down, they do not follow the lowest areas.
Screenshot shows some lava lines, but I'd prefer them in the real dips. And here's the tmd file as well.

Crashes my WM, which version are you using? I'm using 2.1, maybe I need 2.3 ...

Dune

Sorry about that. I have 2.2. Don't know if I can save in lower version.

TheBadger

still rendering?
It has been eaten.

Dune

Well, I need to have some good looking streams of lava first. It also renders quite slow with all the smoke, so I won't do that without proper maps. And as I jump from here to there, it has been lying around....

Fantastic project (I admire all the hard work you've done since but there is something about your second image (ie the first re-work) that just does-it for me)

Love the animation too
