I tried populating an imported sphere but with the same result; a bird's nest. :'(

Thanks to Kadri. So there is not much I can do about it at the moment I guess. So I have to switch to a texture. That will be more difficult, but it is possible.

One workaround that comes to my mind is exporting the object from Terragen with the micro exporter and then importing the object ones again.
A basic low quality version is enough; you will hide it anyway. Populating should work if you don't move-rotate the object...in theory at least.
