This will be an interesting experiment. At least the terrain should be relatively simple. I must admit, I'm not a big fan of Constable. I much prefer Turner.

cyphyr

Well I only went for Constable by accident but actually I was thinking it would be interesting to try to tackle some of the other great landscape painters, Turner, Monet et al. Anybody up for "The Water Lilies", some of the London paintings or Turners "The Fighting Temerarie"? :)

Constable is probably a better choice. It's a bit more solid. I think Turner might be quite hard because of the subtle atmosphere and colour variations. One thing is certain, TG2 can create quite painterly looking images so this will definitely be interesting.

Well moving on from the cottage I've started work on the cart. Constables painting has very little detail visible (at lease in my reference photo http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/cgi-bin/WebObjects.dll/CollectionPublisher.woa/wa/loadApplet?workNumber=NG1207&collectionPublisherSection=work) so after a little more research and some supposition I figured that since the location of Flatford Mill is in Suffolk the cart may have been a Suffolk Cart. This will do to be going on with. Texturing still needs to be done, as dose figuring out how the horse tak (any horsey types here?) works and the wheel axel mechanism.
In the course of this research I also discovered that the water in the Hay Wain is not a river but rather a Mill Pond, still there today. The aerial photograph will give me all I need to sculpt the landscape.

They are Draft Horses (you know like Budwieser) :)

cyphyr

They're actually supposed to be shire horses, we used to have them locally where I grew up in London to pull the Youngs Brewery wagons to the local pubs. There was a useful side line in that some enterprising guys used to follow them about and collect their manure to sell on to gardeners for their roses. I remember lugging bags of the stuff through the house, Ahh the good ol' days :)

Sounds like a scene from Dickens.

:D

Hey, the cart and horses look terrific! I'll let you send me a copy, if you like.

;)  ;D

cyphyr

Heres the updated cart texture, still some work to do, but that involves figuring out the mechanics of the front end and tac. I'll work on the Horses next and sort out the harnesses at the same time.
I'll upload the models and textures when its finished so you can play too. ;)

That's looking great! Sounds as if your work is going to be much more realistic and detailed than the ones I did. I didn't bother with the tac.

If everything else is up to the standard that the cart is obviously going to be then it should be a reallly good end result.

Small world.  :)

I am also from Wandsworth.  I lived close to the common at the top of East Hill where were you?

As far as I know (I am not local any more), they kept the shore horses to the end, There was some kind of merger or buy out last year and the Ram Brewery is no more, well most of it.  I was in the area about a month ago and the tall stainless steel vats or whatever they were have gone although most of the buildings appeared to still be there. Youngs are now brewing somewhere in Bedfordshire I think, I have been told that they are going to be keeping some kind of presence on the brewery site which will be developed as surprise, surprise shops and flats that no normal people can afford.

Not sure about Dickens but The Veritas gas mantle factory was up until the conversion the natural gas in the early 70s just along the road from the brewery, I think Sainsbury's is on that site now.   :-\

Enough of the local history.  ;D

This Haywain project looks interesting, I look forward to seeing the end result; even if I'm not a real Constable fan, a bit too twee with a tendency towards the bucolic for my liking  :-\ a bit like Vaughn Williams; Although they both have there moments. It is while since I visited the Tate (The original one not the converted power station), but some of Constable's later, lesser known works were more or less cloud studies so eminently suited to TG.  ;)

Smoke me a kipper I'll be back for breakfast.

Ah well, I was from the other side of the tracks, West Hill, Lebanon Gardens to be exact, left at the first opportunity and now live in the West country, much nicer. Do you remember a Music instrument shop in the High Street called "Jail House Rock", had my first job there running the studios up stairs, ahh good times ::)

Thought I'd post a WIP to show how things are going. I'm nearly finished on the cart, cottage and textures for both. I think I'll work on the landscape and sky for a while now, all this modeling is starting to do my head in. Still its good to know that TG can still handle everything I've thrown at this time round.
