Great update!  After doing some very quick tests I think I can get about 20% render time savings.  That's 2 hours off a 10 hour render.  :D

To answer my own question, I just tried this - it works perfect and even more easier than I expected. Excellent way to give additional detail for a mesh. I just plugged the normal map image to the displacement image of the default shader and gave it a little bit of displacement multiplier to compensate for the size of the object.
