Water stain... how to?

Hi, I am trying to find water stain textures. What I want is to have a good texture of water stain on stone, that I can separate from the surface in one image, and apply to a new texture I am making in Photoshop.

1st problem is finding the stain texture. Plenty of stuff on google as you would guess, but also not terribly good for texture editing and image mixing. Guess I kinda need specific texture shots, not general images that have water stain in them.

Anyway, Ideas on this topic?.. How to's, resources, tuts, textures, your way of doing things, anything you feel like telling me may help. just looking for anything really, kind just starting on it for the most part.

Here are some nice images that have what I want to produce through image editing in PS (nice images to look at too, by the way)

If you polygonised the rockfaces, you could try out Substance Painter's particle paint system. It has various particle tools including a rain tool that would probably give you the streaks you're after. Not sure how you'd best map it, but I guess matching camera projections and freezing it to UV space on the poly version for import into SP might do the trick.

Nope. Galileo was right for the simpler reason that he was right.

HOLY COW!

Only ever saw the name of this soft in some forums. But never looked at it before.
Don't know if this is what I want to try and do right now due to the time I have. But I WANT THIS SOFT!

I have Mud for painting, but mud does *not* do a lot of what Substance does. Substance looks pretty amazing. Looks like it is better than mari in some respects too. Also MUCH MUCH more affordable!

Thanks for the info on that!

Gonna look at this as soon as I have time.

You're welcome. I'm using both SP and 3DCoat. Particle painting in one, voxel sculpting in the other, PBR texturing in both. Kick ass  8)

Quotevoxel sculpting

Shit man. Do you know I was trying to remember the term "Voxel" for like a month. Had been trying to look up info on it and just could not remember the term, thus found nothing like I was after... ;D well, there u go.

Good call!
...Worth saving up to get the bundle 'substance live' ... That is what I am planning... :)
Looks great!

mhaze

I found it buggy and of limited value with TG. Needs really good UVs and the material system is difficult to use works much better with high end modelling packages that can use its more sophisticated facillities.

mhaze

For streaks use a y stretched powerfractal.

TheBadger

Using TG to paint models? No.
For one, you cannot export those textures. And for two, that sucks anyway.

Compare Substance to mari and mudbox. Look at cost and tools. Talking about Substance in terms of TG does not make any sense.
Both Mari and mud are around $1,000.00 (Z too). Some bugs in Substance should be expected at the low price point.

Please explain this.

I'ts primarily designed for the games market and for output from high end packages such as maya not the simple packages I use.  It's not tolerant of anything but perfect UV's.  Many of the techniques and I can't off hand remember names just don't work in TG.  Materials are expensive though you can modify existing ones to some extent.

TheBadger

Interesting for sure.

To the best of your knowledge, what does substance believe is perfect UVs?

Can't answer that, I'm too ignorant :-[
