This guy is doing the right thing. For now, the image editor is not very versatile, yet. Maybe, if enough volunteer developers are helping with pushing this further, it may eventually become a full featured editor.
What strikes me though as a potential downside of his endeavor is, that free software like gimp are so much more advanced already, and able to run on all operating systems. So he will have a hard time catching up. However, competition is good, even among free applications.
I have high hopes that gimp will make another big stride in its capabiltities over the next 2 years, making the need for photoshop obsolete. PS is so insanely high priced, it's unbelievable. Right, it has a lot of features for print and whatnot, but then they don't offer a reasonably downsized version either, that comes more affordable. Will probably never happen.
So yeah, gimp and inititatives like the one form worth1000 are very welcome. Hooray!
