Wow is right!  The Speedtree implementation into UE4.8 is also a big Wow as well. And to top it off - UE4 is free!  The Kite Demo, with the 100 square miles of 'Open World' to roam in is a large temptation to try out. Almost enough to go out and purchase a Titan X 12 gig video card, well almost... Thanks for posting the links to the images.

TheBadger

Yeah, its free completely to use for linear story telling. As long as you don't make a game, no royalties. Otherwise 5% or something.
I would buy the titan right now if I could also afford a PC to put it in :-\

Just for 5 minutes.
Need to get some props (objects) to really say I tried it.

Kadri

I see. Looks like it could be worth at least to have a look :)

Have anyone tried it?

I have been tinkering with it.
You get free games with the soft too, by the way. Have not played them yet though.
I am mostly interested in the soft for story telling. But My interest in making interactive environments, or even games has been growing steadily.

Unreal 4 is pretty cool just by looking at it. The UI is not overwhelming to you when you first look at it, in the same way, say, Maya is for example. But I am not very far along. No where close to Seth's OP stuff. But there are lots of learning materials on-line, huge communities too.

Anyway, you get a bunch of stuff when you install the soft. It will take a while for you to go through it all just to know whats there and everything you can do with it. Its pretty fun and interesting just to look around.

Also, you can get a crap ton of 100% free assets to use too.

Thanks Michael. I hope i have time to have a look.

Here's another link to some nice images out of UE4 (4.5):

World Machine and Speedtree are primary tools to create content in UE4 these days;  WM was used to create the terrain in the Open World of the 'Kite Demo', and Speedtree's integration is further enhanced with new population tools in UE4.8. http://blog.speedtree.com/2015/06/unreal-4-8-adds-new-foliage-features/

One wonders if TG might serve as an additional source of content?

With Alembic support coming for UE4 (4.9 supposedly)   https://trello.com/b/gHooNW9I/ue4-roadmap
This would open all sorts of opportunities:  http://blog.kiteandlightning.la/download-insurgent-vr-shatter/  (check out the 'Divergent' video). The coders stated:

Alembic Cache Playback" To create a fast content production workflow, we also wrote an alembic cache plugin that allows you to playback Alembic files in UE4. This allows us to import    vertex cache animation such as water simulations or rigid motion animation..."

It will be hard to imagine a future where 'traditional' landscape software such as Vue and TG are going to compete with solutions such as UE, Unity, etc.  The ability to utilize the diverse formats and real time rendering with the plethora of tools available (and planned), plus the large budgets and staffs that promise to be available for these applications makes competition unlikely. Plus it's free. Already the populator tool in UE4 offers per instance editing and multiple plant (or whatever) per population. https://docs.unrealengine.com/latest/INT/Engine/Foliage/index.html

Most of us here have made a fair commitment in time and resources to using TG as our primary landscape tool. Whether TG can continue in that role will be an individual consideration. However, as an additional tool for content creation in a more robust platform , TG can potentially enjoy a strong niche in coming times. What Planetside envisions is important, hopefully the TG roadmap is taking the possible options presented by UE and it's competitors into account.

No disrespect, just my Friday morning rant.  :)

I really want to try UE4, but my plate is kinda running over at the moment. I am in the process of learning WM, Geoglyph, and AfterFX. Don't think my brain can handle too much more.  :-\

There is a video of this lighthouse somewhere. I'll try to find it

the waves look like shit but otherwise, imagine the time you need to spend on Terragen for that quality ;)

Kadri

Not to downplay what they made there but the Lighthouse is more close to "very good game quality".
The first one you shared with the beach they are great.

TheBadger

Agree. But to be fair, a lot of peoples TG renders look like super high quality game or animation scenes, but probably took much longer to set up and render than the Unreal pics.
